Our Military is sent into areas that sometimes
expose them to cancer-causing conditions.
A Google search... "Roughly 300-thousand veterans have died from Agent Orange exposure -- that's almost five times as many as the 58-thousand who died in combat."
I argue the number is much higher. Another Google search suggests.
"Approximately 610,000 to 850,000 Vietnam veterans are estimated to be alive today. These veterans served in the Vietnam War, which took place from August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975. Around 2.7 million Americans served during this period, with over 58,000 casualties."
The question is, how did the other 2.0 million die? My thought is that they died of disease related to Agent Orange exposure. Cancer is a significant cause and is presumptive by the VA.
Now that our former president has been diagnosed with stage four cancer, awareness has risen due to media coverage.
However, the media does not report on Veterans who have presumptive exposures who stop receiving exams that could find early stages of cancer at 75 years of age and treatable. Years later, the cancer has developed to levels like our former president (stage 4).
Solution? Continue to test for cancer while at an early treatable stage, especially for veterans who have presumptive exposure.
Our government should cover the costs of exams regardless of veterans' enrollment with the VA.
Many tests can be performed with home testing equipment. Advise the veteran on discharge that they should have regular testing because of their exposure.
Issue the veterans a card like Medicare that covers the cost of exams and any necessary treatment.
